Batalion AK „Kiliński” uderzył na Pocztę Główną przy pl. Napoleona już 1 sierpnia w godzinie „W”, lecz z powodu utraty elementu zaskoczenia i przewagi ogniowej nieprzyjaciela atak zakończył się niepowodzeniem. Polakom udało się zdobyć jedynie górujący nad pl. Napoleona „wieżowiec Prudential”. W ciągu kolejnych kilkunastu godzin obrońcy Poczty zdołali odeprzeć jeszcze dwa polskie natarcia. Nie powiodły się jednak próby przyjścia im z odsieczą, które zorganizował komendant garnizonu warszawskiego. W rezultacie czwarty szturm, przeprowadzony po południu 2 sierpnia, zakończył się zdobyciem gmachu. W polskie ręce wpadło wtedy 56 jeńców oraz duże ilości broni i amunicji. Prof. Witold Kieżun, ps. The Home Army Battalion "Kiliński" struck the Main Post Office at pl. Napoleon on August 1 at the "W" hour, but due to the loss of the element of surprise and the enemy's fire advantage, the attack failed. Poles managed to get only the towering over pl. Napoleon's "Prudential skyscraper". Over the next dozen or so hours, the defenders of the Post managed to fend off two more Polish attacks. However, attempts to come to their rescue, organized by the commander of the Warsaw garrison, failed. As a result, the fourth assault, carried out in the afternoon of August 2, ended with the capture of the edifice. Then 56 prisoners of war fell into Polish hands and large amounts of weapons and ammunition. Prof. Witold Kieżun, ps.
